In anydynamic system, equilibrium is an idealized point where forces areperfectly balanced.

In economics, equilibrium refers to a state ofthe world where supply equals demand. And although perfectequilibrium is never actually reached in financial markets, thismodern investment framework provides guidance for informedinvestment decisions in a world where random shocks constantlycreate new opportunities.

An Equilibrium Approach outlinesthe modern investment theory used by the Quantitative ResourcesGroup at Goldman Sachs Asset Management to achieve strong, consistent investment returns. Through in-depth analysis and expertadvice, you’ll learn how the insights of an equilibriumframework help you to structure a portfolio that maximizes expectedreturns within a limited risk budget.

You’ll also learn how toidentify and take advantage of deviations from equilibrium. Tremendous progress has been made in both the theory and thepractice of investment management over the past fifty years, andour understanding of the science of market equilibrium and ofportfolio theory has developed with it.

Refresh and try again. Propaganda Quotes Showing of Elull man caught up in the news jaxques remain on the proagandes of the event; be is carried along propagandea the current, and can at no time take a respite to judge and appreciate; he can never stop to reflect. There is never any awareness — of himself, of his condition, of his society — for the man who lives propaganees current events.

Such a man never stops to investigate any one point, any more than he will tie together a series of news events. We already have mentioned man’s inability to consider several facts or events simultaneously and to make a synthesis of them in order to face or to oppose them.

One thought drives away another; old facts are chased by new ones. Under these conditions there can be no thought.

And, in fact, modern man does not think about current problems; he feels them. He reacts, but be does not understand them any more than he takes responsibility for them. He is even less capable of spotting any inconsistency between successive facts; man’s capacity to forget is unlimited.

This is one of the most important and useful points for the propagandist, who can always be sure that a jacquee propaganda theme, statement, or event will be forgotten within a few weeks. Moreover, there is a spontaneous defensive reaction hacques the individual against an excess of information and — to the extent that he clings unconsciously to the unity of his own person — against inconsistencies.

The best defense here jacquds to forget the preceding event. In so doing, man denies his own continuity; to the same extent that he lives on the surface of events and makes today’s events his life by obliterating yesterday’s news, he refuses to see the contradictions in his own life and condemns himself to a life of successive moments, discontinuous and fragmented.

This situation makes the “current-events man” a ready target for propaganda. Indeed, such a man is highly sensitive to the influence of present-day currents; lacking landmarks, he follows all currents. He is unstable propagsndes he runs after what happened today; he relates to the event, and therefore cannot resist any impulse coming from that event.

Because he is immersed in current affairs, this man has a psychological weakness that puts him at the mercy of the propagandist. No confrontation ever occurs between the event and the truth; no relationship ever exists between the event and the person.

Real information never concerns such a person. What could be more striking, more distressing, more decisive than the splitting of the atom, apart from the lelul itself? And yet this great development is kept in the background, behind the fleeting and spectacular result of some catastrophe or sports event because that is the superficial news the average man wants.

Propaganda addresses itself to that man; like him, it can relate only to the most superficial aspect of a spectacular event, which alone can interest man and lead him to make a certain decision or adopt a certain attitude.

But here we must make an important qualification.

The e,lul event may be a real fact, existing objectively, or it may be only an item of information, the dissemination of a supposed fact. What makes it news is propayandes dissemination, not its objective reality. The Formation of Men’s Attitudes. Propaganda is called upon to solve problems created by technology, to play on maladjustments, and to integrate the individual into a technological world.

It must operate on the individual at the level of the unconscious. He must not know that he is being shaped by outside forces They learn more and more that their group is right, that its actions are justified; thus their beliefs are strengthened. At the same time, such propaganda contains elements of criticism and refutation of other groups, which will never be read or heard by a member of another group Thus we see before our eyes how a world of closed minds establishes itself, a world in which everybody talks to himself, everybody constantly jacqued his own certainty about himself and the wrongs done him propaganses the Others – a world in which nobody listens to anybody else.

Ellul and Merton

He who acts in obedience to propaganda can never go back. He is now obliged to believe in that propaganda elluk of his past action. He is obliged to receive from it his justification and authority, without which his action will seem to him absurd or unjust, which would be intolerable.

He is obliged to continue to advance in the direction indicated by propaganda, for action demands more action.

He is what one calls committed – which is certainly what the Communist party anticipates, for example, and what the Nazis accomplished. The man who has acted in accordance with the existing propaganda has taken his place in society. From then on he has enemies. Often he has broken with his milieu or his family; he may be compromised. He is forced to accept the new milieu and the new friends that propaganda makes for him. Often he has committed an act reprehensible by traditional moral standards and has disturbed a certain order; he needs a justification for this elpul and he gets more deeply involved by repeating the act in order to prove that it was just.

Thus he is caught up in a movement that develops until it totally occupies the breadth of his conscience. Propaganda now masters him completely — and we must bear in mind that any propaganda that does not lead to this kind of participation is mere child’s play. With each of these events propaganda developed further, increased in depth, discovered new methods. At the same time it conquered new nations and new territories: To reach the enemy, one must use his weapons; this undeniable argument is the key to the systematic development of propaganda.

And in this way propaganda has become a permanent feature in nations propaganeds actually despise it, such as the United States and France. Therefore, continuing propaganda must slowly create a climate first, and then prevent the individual from noticing a particular propaganda operation in contrast to ordinary daily events.

He reacts, but he does not understand them any more than he takes responsibility for them. All this is debatable, for the important thing is not to be able to read, but to understand what one reads, to reflect on and judge what one reads. Outside of that, reading has no meaning and even destroys certain automatic elpul of memory and observation. But to talk about critical faculties and discernment is to talk about something far above primary education and to consider a very small minority.

The vast majority of people, perhaps 90 percent, know how to read, but do not exercise their intelligence beyond this. They attribute authority and eminent value to the printed word, or, conversely, reject it altogether.

As these people do not possess enough knowledge to reflect and discern, they believe—or disbelieve—in toto what they read. And as such people, moreover, will select the easiest, not the hardest, reading matter, they are precisely on the level at which the printed word can seize and convince them without opposition. They are perfectly adapted to propaganda. By this we mean not only the Western world, but all the world that shares a modern technology and is structured into nations….

The other great psychological reflection of social reality is the myth. The myth expresses the deep inclinations of a society. Without it, the masses would not cling to a certain civilization, or its process of development and crisis.

Propaganda is forced to build on those presuppositions and to express these myths, for without them nobody would listen to it. And in so building it must always go in the same direction as society; it can only reinforce society.

Propaganda Quotes by Jacques Ellul

A propaganda that questions progress or work would arouse distain and reach nobody; it would immediately be branded as an ideology of the intellectuals, since most people feel that the serious things are material things because they are related to labor, and so on.

It is remarkable how the various presuppositions and aspects of myths complement each other, support each other, mutually defend each propagades If the propagandist attacks the network at one point, all myths react to the attack. Propaganda must be based on current beliefs and symbols to reach man and win him over.

I loved the ideology, the principles, and the motivation behind it, but on the other hand there is way too much existentialist talk for my taste, and I didn’t like how the narrating character seemed to be constatly surprised by the actions of his master. Muita pagina para repetir a mesma mensagem. There’s a charismatic, roving wanderer who uses the Socratic method to wake up society from its ignorance and self-destruction.

It’s part self-help book, part allegory. To be truthful, only a few instances were profound and most of the book felt “been there done that. I prefer to read flowery prose; that’s just me. So I got this book as a b’day present and it seemed interesting. The thing is, the story is OK, and it has a good happy little utopic message, but the narrator is incredibly annoying in his ramblings and self-doubts.

I’m all about Pollyanna and ‘things can be better’ and such, but this was too utopic even for me! Sep 26, Gina rated it it was ok. What started off as an inspiring gripping read fades off to be slow, draggy and too philosophical after the 5th chapter. The contents and concept of the story is intriguing but the writing style fails to keep me reading the pages to the end without lots of breaks in between. It simply got too textbook heavy. O livro tem muitos elementos que remetem a filmes “pipoca” brasileiros da nova safra.

Conveniently, the dreamseller’s cryptic messages allow them to figure things out by themselves, or sometimes not. To me that’s what makes the story seem lacking in flow and connectivity. There is a sequel to this, so being that I have written a rather unflattering review — perhaps, the fullness of the ENTIRE story unfolds in the subsequent work, so I will read it too.

This was just ok for me. I do enjoy philosophical novels sometimes, but I thought this one got all the ideas out it the first 10 pages.

The rest of the book felt like he was beating a dead horse.

I think I’ll be passing on the sequel. Very poorly written, repetitive, and, most of the time, the author says in every chapter what will happen next. However, I liked the hopefulness of Cury, but too much of it became annoying. Excellent ideas but NO style. No mystery, no plot.

Loved the ideas but the book is dull because of lack of style. Calculus Made Easy by Silvanus P. Thompson

silvans It’s still not that easy, but – as Martin Gardner explains in the introduction – this book still outshines any textbook in terms of accessibility and simplicity. I know I didn’t. No wonder many people still look at math students as possessing a form of ‘genius’ that is both threatening p.thompaon alienating at the same time. This book was written for school kids back in It’s still not that easy, but – as Martin P.thomson explains in the introduction – this book still outshines any textbook in terms of accessibility and simplicity.

This book was written for school kids back in and contains very simple explanations with a little bit of dry humor thrown in. Very British and sensible, and a much better approach to calclus mathematics to children or, in my case, 28 year olds. Mad props for being the first calculus text I didn’t hate, and actually being fun. I really got a feel for how important it was for Thompson to remove the intimidation from calculus.

The style is conversational, even breezy. What one fool can do, another can. The invective against obscurantism in mathematics is also spot on.

But let’s be honest: To be fair to Thompson, though, the simplicity comes in part from using infinitesimals rather than limits, and the logical basis for infinitesimals wouldn’t achieve rigor until non-standard analysis circaor smooth infinitesimal analysis circa Heck, Thompson wrote while mainstream analysis was still being worked out. So highly recommended to a bright high-schooler or baffled undergrad, ideally to be followed by A Primer of Infinitesimal Analysisif you can convince people that you don’t need the standard analysis curriculum.

Aug 15, Rod Jr. Of all the math books I’ve read, this one is by far the most exciting. Thompson was both irreverent and witty calclus his development of the subject.

Prior to this book, I had attempted to wade through a couple of college entry-level calculus textbooks, but found the style of both authors to be obtuse and obfuscating. I would read in one until I couldn’t go any farther, then I would read in the other up to the same byy point. Then I would realize what both of them were trying to say. The simplicity that they had mangled has all been straightened out under the compassionate and clear pen of Sylvanus P.

When I first found this book in the mid’s, I thought at first that it was one of those “made easy” trend books I had been seeing so much of.

But no, this little gem had seen by then three dozen reprintings starting in There are so many things I wish had been done to illuminate the subject more thoroughly, but perhaps one day I’ll have to write it myself. The idea si,vanus calculus is so simple, and Mr.

Thompson’s little book is the best that I’ve seen, yet. Sep 28, Roger rated it it was amazing. This was a book that I skimmed through, rather than thoroughly digested, not least because much of each chapter consists of worked examples and exercises which I didn’t attempt.

I studied calculus at school, and used it occasionally at university, but I’ve not needed it since so this was a trip down memory lane. I was attracted to this book by its title, which struck me as unusual forwhen my edition was published, and its contents didn’t disappoint.

The author does indeed present the subj This was a book that I skimmed through, rather than thoroughly digested, not least because much p.thompsln each chapter consists of worked examples and exercises which I didn’t attempt. The author does indeed present the subject in a way that is easy to understand, and in a style that is entertaining.

As I expected, it brought back memories of learning calculus at school although I don’t recall the subject being so clearly explained solvanus in this book. Someone trying to learn calculus for the first time could do far worse than using this work as their primer. I should emphasise that the edition I read was not the one updated by Martin Gardner, with its new introduction, three new chapters and modernised language.

These changes will probably have made it more desirable to the modern audience. Nevertheless the edition I read, which incidentally I downloaded for nothing from the Internet Archive because it’s out of copyright, was very readable and it’s antiquated style only served to enhance my enjoyment. Sep 20, Ruchita rated it really liked it Shelves: This isn’t all the other calculus books out there.

In fact, this is a very old book early 20th century silvajus it’s surprising how accessible it is I would say, more than today’s books. The writer is witty and sympathetic at all times the first chapter is called p.htompson Deliver You From Preliminary Terrors’. Jun 08, Wm Pope rated it it was amazing. I have been doing some reading that requires brushing up on my integration.

Integration is one of those skills that goes to rust quickly if you don’t use it. Got a copy of Calculus Made Easy.

It turned out to not be at all what I’m looking for yet I am sllvanus it 5 stars! If you want to learn calculus read this book first. If you ever wondered p.thmopson calculus was about find a co I have been zilvanus some reading that requires brushing up on my integration. If you ever wondered what calculus was about find a copy of this book and read the first 4 – 5 chapters, they’re short. Calculus Made Easy demystifies the concepts and clearly explains the symbols and language of differentiation and integration.

The author acknowledges that the language of calculus is obtuse and pokes some fun at the mathematicians that came up with. Martin Gardner has updated and revised the latest edition. The sections by Mr Calculhs are good but not as lucid as those of the original. This is ONLY because the original is so good. If you have any interest in math or are going to be forced into taking Calculus Calculus Made Easy will make the topic enjoyable or at least understandable. Dec 21, Peter is currently reading it Shelves: You can download a PDF of the edition at http: The book is a fun, cheap, and somewhat dated way to get p.tjompson calculus.

It’s certainly not “rigorous” by a long shot, but it does what it sets out to do: There are plenty of more modern and more rigorous books on calculus available for free online, but I have never seen one that’s this approachable and charming, truth be told.

So start here if you’re new-ish to calculus. It’s been pointed out by others that Martin Gardner’s changes for the edition are of dubious value, and I agree. Yes, p.thpmpson modernized the terminology and that’s somewhat useful, but it comes at the price of new silvanys compared to the edition.

He also messed a bit too much with the examples in the text, leaving out some and complicating without any hints as to why others.

Of the three new chapters he wrote, only the one about functions seems useful. If Thompson had wanted to bother with limits and epsilon-delta stuff he would have, so why drag that into the book? I guess it’s understandable bt Gardner wanted to do more than just change the wording given that his name is all over the cover, but he has not improved the book as far as I am concerned.

I can’t say anything about his 20 new problems, but I would assume that they are a lot harder than anything else in xilvanus book. Feb 01, Maxwell Pollack rated it really liked it. The author doesn’t seem to have a consistent audience in mind. He can’t slivanus what level of reader he’s teaching.

Oct 15, Arun Mahendrakar rated it really liked it. I’m a software developer and have had my interests in Mathematics for quite some time now. But my knowledge about Calculus was very limited. Hence I picked up this book.

The book has real simple language and of course since this a book p.thopmson an advanced concept, the reader is expected to have some background in Mathematics. The author provides some examples practicing which gets the bby ingrained in the readers’ mind.

I’ll be honest, I didn’t solve most of the problems that was not my intent I’m a software developer and have had my interests in Mathematics for quite some time now. I’ll be honest, I didn’t solve most of the problems that was not my intention of reading the book either.

The book goes into some depth and talks about chain rule, product rule and the quotient rule in Differential Calculus. It would’ve made it the book better if it had a chapter on Limits as well.
